We Have A Right to Know What is in our Food Like Dozens of Other Countries

The fight in California for proposition 37 is the barricades of a long fight to label GMO foods. A fight against Monsanto and the giant food industry. It is not just a fight for health but for the basic right of people to know what is in their food. A right recognized buy the thousands of labeling requirements now in place.

Well over a year ago, through the World Health Organization (WHO) reached an agreement on GMO food labeling. It was voluntary, as these things so often are but it was a step forward. Now 50 or more countries require labeling of GMO Food.

During the last decade, poll after poll shows 90 percent Americans agree that genetically engineered ingredients should be labeled.

Mark Bittman made this point in a recent New York Times piece:1

“Polls show Prop 37 to be overwhelmingly popular: roughly 65 percent ‘for’, to 20 percent ‘against’, with 15 percent undecided. Nationally, on the broader issue of labeling, in answer to the question of whether the Food and Drug Administration should require that:

‘Foods which have been genetically engineered or contain genetically engineered ingredients be labeled to indicate that,’ a whopping 91 percent of voters say ‘yes’ and 5 percent say ‘no’. This is as nonpartisan as an issue gets, and the polls haven’t changed much in the last couple of years.”

The list of countries that enforce the right to know GMO includes Europe, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, South Korea, Japan, Brazil, China, Russia, New Zealand and others. Yet we in Americans don’t know if the food they eat has been genetically altered.

The precedents for labeling are strong and long standing.. Right now, the FDA requires the labeling of over 3,000 ingredients, additives, and processes. If gluten, aspartame, high fructose corn syrup, trans-fats or MSG, colorings, many chemical additives, are in food they must be labeled. The FDA also requires labeling for major food allergens such as peanuts, wheat, shellfish and others.

What is so special about GMO? Monsanto and the food giants who want it kept secret.

These industry giants, including “organic” food companies, are spending millions to keep food ingredients from you and your family. It is time to put a stop to the secrecy and the idea that we don’t have a right to know what we are eating. Nonsense

Proposition 37 is so important for our right to know, and it also support the survival of sustainable, small agriculture, which is threatened in part by the spread of GMO.
